Poem: Shifting sands

Shifting sands

The sands are shifting with the speed of time now.
Seven billion souls have had enough.
They’ll end the roar of tragedy, take no excuse for tyranny.
They know that greed cannot be satisfied.

From the depth of broken hearts we hear from Gaza
the ghostly voices rising from the smoke.
The children dying there crying out for us to hear
the tragic beauty of their little lives.

Attention, press and media, can you hear us?
Or are we talking to a corporate wall?
No more human sacrifice! All we heard today was lies.
What government fears most is you and me.

Hello, Mr President, do you see us?
Are you hoping that we all will stay asleep,
in an everlasting mist – with no spirit to resist,
as your friends complete the rule of cruelty?

At Standing Rock 300 Tribes and Nations
from the world of Mother Earth and Father Sky
joined the Sioux, the Navajo, teaching all of us to know
that greed-sickness is killing Future’s child.

80,000 black men in the prisons
back home in the good old USA
How many on Death Row?
Soon the entire world will know what’s hid in Blue Ridge Mountains and below.

Prison walls across the globe will crack wide open,
greeted by the spirit of the sun.

The souls who were never heard tell their lonely secrets to the world
from Guantanamo to Abu Ghraib.

We shout our desperation in the streets now,
in every town from sea to shining sea.
Can your mind shake off its leash enough to sense how freedom feels?
Can you dream the dream of beauty will come true?
The sands are shifting with the speed of time now.

Seven billion souls have had enough.
They’ll end the roar of tragedy, take no excuse for tyranny.
They know the love that cruelty can’t hide.
