Five Minutes to  Midnight aims to explain some of the intractable issues in international politics. In the coming weeks we will begin by examining six topics:

First: the multifaceted and multiplying problems facing Iran, some of which are coordinated by Israel with the Gulf states and the Zionist lobbies in the United States, while others are orchestrated by Israel alone;

Second: the ever deepening imbroglio which has left Libya once again with two governments, one Tripoli-based corrupt, incompetent, Turkish and Anglo-American backed, while the other, now operating from the central town of Sirt, led by a highly controversial figure with aspirations to become a British pimp and who’s responsible for at least one mass murder — ordering his militia in November 2013 to open fire on unarmed protesters in Tripoli, killing dozens and wounding at least 450;

Third: Syria, a victim of Saudi- Qatari- and Turkish-backed Islamist mass murder and destruction, an incompetent, corrupt, bankrupt and sectarian government, and Turkish-Russian collaboration and competition;

Fourth: Tunisia, where the president has suspended political activities and plans to hold a referendum on a new constitution in an attempt to stem corruption and end what appears to be a slow-motion coup by the Muslim Brotherhood’s Islamic Renaissance Party;

Fifth: the Russian-Ukrainian war viewed from an international systems perspective

Sixth: Palestine, Israel and the apparent non-prospects for a just and peaceful solution.

I will host most of the episodes. I am a retired editor of 30 years experience working for Britain’s public-funded broadcaster, and I hold a doctorate in Politics from Lancaster University.

All our interviewees will be experts in their fields. We will try to keep each episode short and simple — and therefore memorable. Unlike mainstream broadcasters, we are not afraid of governments cutting out funds or bullying us, or of political lobbies terrorising us. We will ask hard questions and seek honest answers.
